Kett Turton: The Flea Theatre Interview , 2015

#serials writer, Kett Turton (above), chats with The Flea’s Audience Development Manager, Ellen Mullen.

ELLEN: When did you first hear about The Flea; what led you here?

KETT: I heard about the Flea through Crystal Arnette, whomeI was working with at the time on a play for NY Fringe.

ELLEN: Does your #serial this week have a title yet?

KETT: Yes it does, although I might change it. It’s called Running in a Dream.

ELLEN: What’s on your theater to see list this Spring?

KETT: I hear great things about The Flick at Barrow St.  I’m excited to see Bear Slayer this weekend at Ars Nova.

ELLEN: Word on the internet is that you started acting in local theater when you were  4.  What led you to playwriting?

KETT: Yeah, acting, theater and writing were in my world from a young age. I’ve always written but it was more of a cathartic hobby until recently. My professional life focussed on acting, mainly in film and TV. I’m happy to say that seems to be shifting now. I’m not entirely sure what’s causing it. Acting teaches me about writing and writing teaches me about acting.

ELLEN: You do a ton of film work.  What do you love about theater, and what do you love about film?

KETT: Film opened up to me when I was a teenager. I was in the right place at the right time. Film is wonderful to work in as an actor, but if your focus is exclusively on acting it can sometimes feel as though you’re a living prop. Theater and film acting should feed into each other I think. One adds to your experience and ability in the other.

ELLEN: What else are you working on, where can we learn more about your work?

KETT: I’m excited to say I’m acting this summer in Todd Solondz’s next film. There are several writing projects in various stages of development. A good place to check out my acting work is www.kett-turton.com

ELLEN: If you had a #serials spirit animal, what would it be?

KETT: I speak Cat.

ELLEN: Finish this sentence,     +        +        #serials

KETT: blood + sweat + beers =#serials
